My mother was named for Eugene Victor Debs, the presidential candidate of the Socialist Party of America from 1900-1920 (he ran 5 times). Debs was a Terre Haute, Indiana, native. Supposedly, my grandfather, Fred Deal, worked as a labor organizer with Debs. Fred was possibly, for awhile, a Terre Haute Alderman, and he had worked in the local coal mines, and later with local mills. The story goes that my grandmother had wanted to name my mother Victoria Gene (very much for Debs who had just, some 5 weeks prior to my mother's birth, received a presidential pardon, ending his prison term (for "sedition")), but my grandfather balked and she was named Beaulah Gene, but then my grandmother got back at him by calling my mother "Gene" -- all was not too well in that marriage.
